For wisdom tooth i always take x ray . x rays are taken in such a way that wisdom tooth should be visible along with mandibular nerve canal. This x ray is very important and should be taken in right direction,  4-5 mm of bone around apex of root should be covered in this x ray. After taking this kind of x ray and mandibular nerve canal is not seen in picture then its safe to remove tooth  as its far away from mandibular nerve. If this canal is seen  near to root apex or is in contact with it then its better to take 3 d scan to check three dimensional location of mandibular nerve with this wisdom tooth root.
 Once you came to know about three dimensional positioning of mandibular nerve in relation to wisdom tooth then its become easy to plan removal of tooth safely.
